<br />
<br />
Since I have been back from Hampton, I have been busy. In the fall (2015), I was busy talking to everyone about my experience there and some of the epiphanies I had.<br />
<br />
I was especially excited to talk with John Moran about my experience as he had a similar one. That discussion lead to us collaborating on a Tudor Feast for Ealdormere's Kingdom Arts and Science Competition. We wanted to try and recreate a full feast with all the right servers and pomp and ceremony.<br />
<br />
We wanted to create the atmosphere of a Tudor Dining hall with ceremony of hand washing, seating by rank, entering the hall by rank, etc. THL Christabel worked hard as Master of the Hall to ensure this was followed. Not to forget to mention ALL of the volunteers who served the dishes. This is a very difficult thing to accomplish in an SCA setting. :p <br />
<br />
Unfortunately for me, there are no pictures of either of us in the kitchen or of the actual feast that I can find. We were excited to do this for our King Quilliam III and Queen Domhnail II as Their reign was a Tudor Reign. (Very exciting!)<br />

Ah Feast of the Hare, always an interesting event and I usually try and go. What made this year different was that Rick Mercer was going to go and film for his show the Rick Mercer Report. (If you are not from Canada and reading this - he's a national treasure of comedy. His rants are excellent and catch Canadian sentiment exactly! Check out his you tube - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/MercerReport" target="_blank">Mercer Report</a>)<br />

</tbody></table>
What made this year different, was that I was working hard at getting my Queen's Prize Tournament (QPT) work done, so I was planning on passing on the event, but I got a call from my partner in crime Avelyn, swearing me to secrecy about Mr. Mercer's attendance. She wanted to pick my brain for some more demo like activities he could partake in. So I (the nice friend that I am, lol) offered to help and enlist my Tudor cooking partner in crime John Moran to use his UBER period outdoor cooking set-up. Poor John, he always puts up with my voluntold activities. Thankfully he was free to do it and we can play outside for the day. I did promise to help setup/take-down/and pack stuff in my car too. (I think that helped)<br />
<br />
<br />
The only thing that put a wrench into my plans was that there was a death in the family. I was super busy cleaning out an apartment and dealing with lawyers, always a crazy thing to do. Avelyn said I didn't need to do it, but the image of the SCA was at stake. This is a national TV show, and we wanted to make sure we represented our hobby well. To be honest, there was no guarantee that we would even make it off the editing room floor. But we had to try and represent all the non-fighting cool activities that happen at event (let's be honest, fighting always gets great coverage, it loud, flashy and everyone looks great), so the competition can be fierce.<br />

<br />
<br />
The night before the event I head over to John's for load-up, I tell him I am planning a White Pea and Bacon Pottage, should be fairly easy to cook over the fire and will hold up in case the Rick Mercer crew take longer to get to us. We also decided we need to load up like this for Trillium War, so John can have a little more space in his SUV for his stuff.<br />
<br />
Morning of arrives and it is a cool day (won't get warmer than 8 degrees C.) but we will have a fire. Wilhelm come over to help us set up the tent and keep up company as we got the fire started.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ee;">Meat and Pottage on the fire<u><br /></u></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was super excited to get right into working with the fire. John spiced his meat, and got it on the rotisserie (man powered) while I got started. I had my white peas soaking overnight drained and ready to go. The trestle tables was set up for chopping of the onion, garlic and bacon. So I put John's larger cast iron Tudor pot (Bell) on the fire to warm up. I added the bacon to the pot to cook down, and so I could use the fat to cook the onions. Once the bacon/onion was decently cooked I added some garlic. At this point many of the fighters who were fighting down wind of our cooking, stopped by to see what was going on, and to comment on how it smelt delicious at 9am. :D</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I stirred up the mixture and added the beans and chicken stock to cover the beans. Basically it sat on the fire (mixing it once in a while) covered till lunch time. The texture was amazing, like a nice mushy thick porridge. (hence pottage. lol) We were told that Rick was going to come over and as some questions and taste the food. </div>

<ol>
<li>Lucky for us, people didn't mind coming by and chatting with us while we turned the meat and made sure the pottage didn't burn. Bell cooked the food a lot faster than I was expecting, she has a wonderful shape to create convection within the pot when there is a lid. The only issue I had was that the brazier is quite high on its box, and that meant I was very close to the fire. I singed my smock, getting in to close to stir. Now I get why I see reenactors with wool sleeve protectors when they are working by the fire.</li>
<li><br /></li>
<li>We were ready when Rick came by, he asked a bunch of questions and tasted the food and that was it. Pretty anti-climatic, but he had more things to see and film. We were lucky to get any camera time and this great picture of us. See proof that it happened. Both John and I were hopeful we made the cut. Only time would tell. We were not sure at the time when the episode would air, and it was only at QPT would we get that it was going to show at the end of November.</li>

I spent all day outside in November in Ottawa, which is unheard of. lol I brought a wool gown I had been working on since the summer and watch all the fighting. I got to see Avelyn close the door on Rick's face when he was in full armor...lol and watch some great dancing just on the other side of us. It was a really wonderful day and I had a great time just sitting by the fire, talking to anyone that would stop by.<br />
<br />
Alex was at the event doing an SCA photo booth (which was AWESOME) so we could all get pictures of ourselves and our friends. (You see them above). Then it was time to pack up and head home. Mission accomplished I think. Then it was just waiting till the episode aired.<br />

We wanted to do a small 20 person themed event to maybe encourage new people to come out and have our SCA friends come for some fun food and atmosphere.<br />
<br />
<br />
We rented a cute city space in Bells Corners in Ottawa, it had a good kitchen and great log cabin atmosphere. What was also great about it was that some easy forest trails end right at the community centre. So, Cristabel and Wilhelm organize the path and decided what the pilgrimage would be like. John helped create the path markers and there was even a Hermit.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Pilgrims would walk the trail and arrive at the Inn of the Surly Mermaid (my household with Avelyn Wexcombe and Dafydd ap Alan). Everyone was encouraged to come dressed up as a medieval pilgrim.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">John made this based off a 17th century sign</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
I was tasked to make the food (Quelle surprise!). We needed enough food for the evening to be spaced out all afternoon/evening. There would be stories and games and some dancing for entertainment. A couple of months before the event I was contacted by a guest to see if we would have Gluten Free options. I knew I also had some Vegetarians as well, so this posed an interesting challenge.<br />

The last time was when my Daughter was 2 and it was HOT...so very HOT and we didn't even wear garb. So my husband wasn't interested in going this year, but I wanted to go since I had been invited to camp with Fettered Fleur. They are attempting a period camp, and didn't mind that my modern tent was going to be there.<br />
<br />
It was also a chance for me to cook with fire and John was going to teach me how he does it. YAY! This year I also decided to go for the Friday to Sunday, which I normally don't do. Now there is always concerns when camping with new people. For me, I worry about personalities, chores and expectations. I know there are always classes I want to do, and I am a planner so I like to schedule things. lol I am not the best at loosey goosey things. I packed up the car and headed to the site. It was about a 4 hour drive, so not too bad. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lblgDErcT9I/WJDXXwcbrEI/AAAAAAABVw4/C_y5C7MP-LQe3DqwxOi2nNgJQqdtJyqsgCLcB/s1600/Frends%2Bof%2BFF%2BCamp%2BTrillies%2B2016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="245" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lblgDErcT9I/WJDXXwcbrEI/AAAAAAABVw4/C_y5C7MP-LQe3DqwxOi2nNgJQqdtJyqsgCLcB/s400/Frends%2Bof%2BFF%2BCamp%2BTrillies%2B2016.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<br />
So we as a group decided on a meal plan and it was reasonable at $20/p/day, though I think it could be done for less than that and the problem with arrival day is that it can take a while to set up, that having food that don't require a kitchen is best. So I would like to plan the food as much as possible this upcoming year. We have kids who come to this event, so it is important to make sure they are fed and watered. :D<br />
<br />
One of the major items we came across as a problem was that there was a MAJOR fire ban. This part of Ontario had little to no rain all summer so far. So the site was a dry very dry field. How do you do fire cooking if you can't have any fire, you ask? Well, have a brazier. We had a fire box that was raised on stand and we used charcoal to fuel it. That way there were no sparks, and it was like cooking with a BBQ. It was a wonderful experience, but I have to say, I was apprehensive to use John's equipment. Next year it will be better.<br />
<br />
We did a lot of cooking, we had a roast beef on the spit, some chicken dishes and a whole host of things. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of us cooking or really our setup. (If anyone has any pictures they wish to share, I would love to post them). I promise for next time to document what we cooked and maybe even recipes. :D<br />
<br />
I had a wonderful time on the Saturday night drinking the mead I love from Quebec, enjoyed a Bardic circle, and general silliness with friends. I was also happy to pack a lot of warm clothes. I packed a wool cloak and my flannel nightgown....boy did I need it at night. I also tested wearing wool in the heat. The result? I was nice and cool. I was more warm in my car than anything else.<br />

This was March 23rd, 2016 (Sorry so late) <br />
<br />
I was asked to go on <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/topic/Tag/D%20is%20for%20Dinner" target="_blank">CBC's All in a Day's D is for dinner</a> segment again. W00T and Terror! This time the format was going to be different. I was to create a recipe with a listener requested food item. The crux is that it was a hard to find item or possibly hard to cook with item. Listeners wrote in what they wanted recipes for and I had to create it.<br />
<br />
So I was told I needed to create something with raw butternut squash. What?!?! who eats this? lol<br />
<br />
So the challenge is on, sure it is March again, just after Kingdom A&S, and I have hurt my back. Seriously. I can't walk or do my 5K walking. It was BAD. :(<br />
<br />
Okay so, I do a bit of research on using raw butternut squash, there is some stuff out there, but people want the texture to remain the same, crisp. So, I decide to do a pickled butternut squash, make them into matchsticks and do a nice Tudor spicing, since really Butternut squash is not a period squash. Hello New World!<br />
<br />
Here is my recipe.<br />

I arrive at the radio station to get ready and see 2 other people come into my area. I find out that there are 3 of us who were given this challenge and both own their own restaurants. WTF! I am sweating now. Don't be fooled by the picture below.<br />

Well, I am happy to say that I was able to hold my own and Alan liked the pickles. He was pleasantly surprised. I gave some to the Chef's after our segment, and they were quite pleased with the flavours and textures. Needless to say I was pretty happy with the compliments. 😀 I could do this radio thing. 😉<br />

Alternate Title: day 11I am greeting you with sadness, this will be my last post for this trip. :(<br />
<br />
Today was my final day at Hampton with the amazing team working there. Jeff was off on his own today, so I made the last trek on my own. It was a beautiful day and they had the <a href="http://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/" target="_blank">Prudential Ride London</a> today, so if I was coming in by car, I would probably have cursed. LOL but I was on the train again. It is a really nice ride.<br />
<br />
When I arrived the street was blocked and a lot of cyclists were coming around the corner there. It was really exciting to watch.<br />
<br />

Walking to the palace I was struck with how wonderful it really is, and that this would be my last time for a while. I was sad. So I took a selfie! LOL<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I think the Palace was smiling. ;)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was excited to see everyone again. I popped into registration and waited to be picked up. This morning it was Barry who came and got me. We chatted about yesterday and what I wanted to today, I explained I would like to maybe do a couple of the audio tours and of course do some more stuff in the kitchen. We said good morning to everyone and Barry walked with me to get my audio guide. I love talking with him, so much knowledge and great tidbits. I wish I could be there longer to get ALL the information from them. OK, it's and excuse to want to sponge all the information.<br />
<br />
So I decided to do the Henry VIII apartment tour. They had the actors in, and I would always seem to get stuck when they would be doing a scene. I video taped some of the music bits for Marie again. :) (I hope they are of use for you, Marie).<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The great hall - amazing tapestries</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I have more pictures on my real camera, so you will have to wait for those. I will create a nice picture gallery when I get home. I went to see the Chapel again (sorry no pictures allowed). Once I finished the tour, I headed back to the kitchens, excited to start my day.<br />
<br />
As I entered, Marc told me there were SCAdians from Canada at the table, so of course we introduced ourselves and chatted. They were curious about how I came to be cooking here. It was fun to meet fellow Canadians AND Scadians!<br />
<br />
Once they moved on, Marc was working on the Pudding of an ox again, so this time I helped mix the items together, so I almost did the whole recipe. What I didn't do was prepare the blood, chop the bacon fat, measure out the oatmeal or spices. It was really fun AND I got to taste it from yesterday. They had sliced it and fried it in bacon fat...Yum, it was quite tasty, and with an egg it would have been even better. I like it when I am surprised on the taste of something.<br />
<br />
It is so easy to get distracted by the people coming through. Everyone was saying really if they finished a recipe it was great, but the main purpose was to engage the visitors and let the food facilitate the interaction. It was a lot of fun explaining what I was doing.<br />
<br />
When there was a bit of a lull, Richard had me work with Robin on a recipe called Ryschewys close and fryez. Which is basically a paste pouch with minced dried fruit and spices, fried. Really delicious. So the first thing we needed to make was the paste (or pasta). I opted to have saffron in it, so it would be a really nice yellow colour. The first thing we needed to do was to grind the saffron, the once it was ground we added water to it, which was a lovely yellow colour. So we put flour in a bowl, add sea salt to it (it helps with the gluten in the dough), mixed it with my hands, then I made a small well in the flour and added the saffron water to it. We mixed it until it started to form a dough. We then had to kneed it until it no longer stretched or bounced back. This is so we can get it as thin as possible. For me with no muscles and little hands was really hard to do. Robin would take over and get it going really well. He said that it should take about 20 min to get the right feel to it.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9aMgC10HpMw/Vb6bnmQi8pI/AAAAAAAAsiw/vv_xSuAGaHs/s1600/IMAG0498.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9aMgC10HpMw/Vb6bnmQi8pI/AAAAAAAAsiw/vv_xSuAGaHs/s400/IMAG0498.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The dough waiting to be rolled. Under a damp cloth</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
While that was resting, we had to get the filling together, so robin had my cut some dates, figs and raisins. Putting it into the big mortar, add a little bit of red wine to give it a bit of liquid, I needed to make a paste with it. This was also really hard, as I have no muscles or muscle memory. Poor Robin had to take over to help wimpy me. :p<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pXYKnsrmS4A/Vb6cOubJNOI/AAAAAAAAsjA/voowJsIlGJY/s1600/IMAG0496.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pXYKnsrmS4A/Vb6cOubJNOI/AAAAAAAAsjA/voowJsIlGJY/s400/IMAG0496.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fruit paste coming along.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Once it was the right consistency, it was time to decide on the spices. Now I was really nervous here as I have never tried some of these spices. Robin was very patient with me and explained what they had, how it tasted (and gave me tastings) and how it smelled. One I had never seen was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubeb" target="_blank">cubeb</a>. Robin crushed it and had me smell it. It had a floral note to it and a little bit of heat when you tasted it. Really a nice spice. You don't need much either. So, I decided on this mixture: cubeb, long pepper, black pepper, cannelle buds (Cassia buds). I ground them up, Robin suggested I give it a sniff and see if it smelled ok. So I did and I said it was missing something....maybe cinnamon. So he shaved some and put it in the mortar for me to grind. When I smelt it again, I announced it was perfect. He said, if it smelt good it would taste good. :) Into the fruit it went. I have to say I was really nervous that it would taste awful. I felt so out of my league.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--KXISnP4Tak/Vb6gsyTljPI/AAAAAAAAsjY/m8bvQCBDlOw/s1600/IMAG0499.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--KXISnP4Tak/Vb6gsyTljPI/AAAAAAAAsjY/m8bvQCBDlOw/s400/IMAG0499.jpg" width="226" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">spiced have been added</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We then rolled out the paste, it needed to be paper thin, so that when fried it would crisp nicely. I loved the rolling pin I was using. It wasn't as long as a French pin and it was a lot thicker, about 3" diameter and about 1.5' long. Really awesome pin. Then I needed to cut out circles in the paste to form the packets. we used the very technical top of a mug. :) I cut out about a dozen circles, then Robin showed me how to stuff them, and try not to rip the dough. also we needed to get all the air out too.<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QUwjt1-YUts/Vb6g09sP8fI/AAAAAAAAsjg/iNB0Nj-TkTo/s1600/IMAG0500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QUwjt1-YUts/Vb6g09sP8fI/AAAAAAAAsjg/iNB0Nj-TkTo/s400/IMAG0500.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Frying them up</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We couldn't have a full fryer on site, so we made due. This was really cool as you can control the heat of the oil on the fire really well, and just take it off when it was too hot. While it was cooling you could add another one in.<br />
<br />
The final product:<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">waiting to be eaten. </td></tr>

These were so delicious! delicate, crunchy and gooey. Really nice. Thanks Robin for all the time on this one. :)<br />
<br />
I realized that it was soon time to head back to London, as I had to meet Jeff at the Globe for Measure for Measure. We were going to be groundlings, I was very excited.<br />
<br />
I made my way around, saying my goodbyes to Richard, Jorge, Marc, Robin and Barry. They were so nice and amazing to work with. I can see why these guys have been together for so long, they are the well oiled machine. I hope I didn't disrupt too much, but I am very grateful for all the time they spent me Jeff and I.<br />
<br />
I wasn't able to get a picture with everyone, but here is one of Richard, me and Jorge - taken by Barry. Thank you, thank you, thank you!<br />

</tbody></table>
I left Hampton Court Palace with a lot of new ideas and concepts. It was amazing watching these guys cook and interact with the visitors. I would love to work with them again. They are very inspiring!<br />
<br />
Now to stand for 2.5 hrs watching Shakespeare...can it get any better? Jeff was waiting in line for us, so I could be close to the stage. The only problem with being short. This show was amazing and being a groundling...I felt I could be a little more rowdy. Lots of sexual innuendos (that's how I like my Shakespeare) and lots of laughs too. Really amazing and I would be a groundling again any time.<br />
<br />
Well time to pack!<br />
<br />
Night!<br />

Soooo....this day was long and coming and I don't know if this post will do it justice. I will try, but man there was so much info.<br />
<br />
The day started out beautiful, Jeff was coming with me, so he made sure we had a good breakfast before we headed out. To be honest, I was not hungry. I was just too nervous to eat, but I made sure I stuffed my face. lol<br />
<br />
Jeff decided he was going to video tape our ride to Hampton. When he is done with it, I will post it. It should be awesome. We decided to walk to Canada Water tube station since it was so nice, then hoped on the Jubilee line to Waterloo station. From Waterloo station we took the train to Hampton, which is about a half hour ride. I can't say how amazing it was outside...and of course I am going to be in a kitchen all day. In fact, I think this weekends weather will be the best since we have been in London. Figures!<br />

It was a fun thing to watch, but I think anyone who has to do protocol work for Royalty would be kinda offended. lol</div>
<div>

<div>
Heading back to the kitchens, we watched Robin (My mistake yesterday - it was not Oliver - I apologize for that.) & Zak working the roasting meat. The great thing is that anyone can have a go at it. In fact, they encourage it. Richard had us start with Jorge who was playing the kitchen clerk. His specialty is period handwriting and manners. we watched him chat with all the visitors and get them to sign the visitor book they were creating. He even created a nice Tudor letter for our visit and sealed it with his personal seal.</div>

Jorge was telling us all about the paper and that it was important to have this linen paper as they had examples that are well over 2000 years old. Modern paper is just not the same, it is too acidic and won't keep like historical parchment. We talked about inks and how cheap it was to make, and sealing wax. I really want to learn how to write like this. :) He then had us help him set up a Tudor table to talk about table manners. He explained how strict they were in Tudor time and how the table was set and the dishes used. This is very interesting!</div>

So the recipe calls for eggs whites and egg yolks, chicken, vinegar (vine, ale or cider) sage, galangal, ginger and cloves. A very simple recipe. Jeff placing the very heavy bronze pot on the fire with the eggs inside.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Eggs are on</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Jeff and I worked together to get the spices ready. The ginger and galangal were dry so we had to shave it before placing it in the brass mortar and pestle. We started with the ginger, then ground it fine in the brass M&P. Once it was a nice consistency, we dumped it into the very large marble mortar with a wooden pestle. We did 2 cloves next, it was recommended to chop the clove a bit before using the mortar. The last one was the galangal, we also shaved this before putting it in the M&P as it was very fibrous and like a dried mushroom (which it is not). Once all the spices were done, they were placed in the large mortar and pestle and the fresh sage was added. the technique to get the fresh sage to mix was really interesting. Richard showed me the proper technique and it had a unique sound, when done right. I need one of these!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The herb and spice mixture</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
When the eggs were done, we needed to peel them (damn eggs are just like that lunch we did), then we needed to separate the yolks and whites. the yolks were then added to the large mortar and mixed together with the spices. Once it was well mixed, we added malt vinegar to the mixture to get a wet consistency (like a deviled egg). It was quite a bit of vinegar, but the flavour was really nice. Then I shredded the whites into the mortar as Jeff stirred it with a spoon. I then placed the mixture into the bottom of the bowl. Richard recommended that I smooth out the top before placing the shredded chicken on top.<br />

<br />
On Friday I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a whole day with Marc Meltonville at K<a href="http://www.hrp.org.uk/KewPalace/" target="_blank">ew Palace</a> Royal Kitchens. Marc is one of the lead food historians for the <a href="http://www.hrp.org.uk/" target="_blank">Historic Royal Palaces</a>. He is an idol for me, I was so nervous meeting him. He is in many of the early Tudor food shows and is a Hampton often. Though this weekend he was working at Kew doing the Georgian food weekend.<br />

<br />
We chatted about so many food and non food related items. He told me about his work in the US on brewing and distillery. About the Chocolate kitchens at Hampton and everything in between. This man knows so much! He knew the history on the kitchens in Kew, how they were completely forgotten in 1818 and used as storage until just recently. How they restored the kitchens, speculated on their uses and amazed at the technological advances.<br />

EDIT: Oops! I totally forgot to mention that I was interviewed on <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/allinaday/" target="_blank">All in a Day</a> with Alan Neal on CBC radio one today. It was on at about 4:50pm. Jeff and I actually caught it on our way back from the grocery store. When I get the mp3, I will post it! ~Erin<br />

Alternate Title: Day 8OMG! I totally forgot to post last night....ok maybe we had a bit much to drink with our new Airbnb hosts at their local pub. Oops, sorry about that!<br />
<br />
Greetings fellow Canadians!<br />
<br />
So yesterday was our last day at Rob's place and we were kinda sad to leave. It was a great location and he was great host too. We were spoiled by the large room the nice big bed, our own table and couch. But we move on and moved to our last Airbnb in Greenwich! Now this one is only 15min from Canada Water tube Station - so it feels like home. I will take some pics of our view tomorrow when there is light. It is really lovely.<br />
<br />
We already had 95% of our stuff at Christiane and Nick's place, so it was easy to pack the rest of our stuff and head out to try some recommended regular bus routes. on Reddit Jeff found some recommended routes to see some great stuff, but the 15 bus route was a bust...off to the British Museum we go instead.<br />
<br />
Now this museum is also free, which makes for easy on the pocket. This museum has the Sutton Hoo helm, the Rosetta Stone, and much, much more. Now the one thing I have noticed about British museums is that they don't jam it with lots of stuff...now this can be good and bad. I personally love it when there is so much stuff you don't know where to start. The German museums are like that.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">We're going to see Old Stuff!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The BM had some really amazing stuff...not enough 16th century for me, but I think their online collection is sooooo much better. We wandered about for 3 hours, which means we saw stuff! Also we did get to see the Rosetta Stone (surrounded by tourists! lol), we glanced at it and said there it is, and left.<br />
<br />
I wandered the shop after lunch and found 3 gems. 2 cookbooks with sources and a really good bibliography, and a tote bag that Mel has and I had been coveting! hehe<br />
<br />
To round out the museum, we went to the Islamic section AND the Rothschild's collection. Now I found a few really awesome pieces for my SCA fighter persona! YAY! AND the Rothschild collection was AMAZING! They had the most amazing collection of gold and silver artefacts. So many to mention.<br />

Once we ginished up at the museum, we decided to take a recommended bus route to see the sights. This time we tried the 24 Pimlico. So we go along heading towards Westminster, and as we are watching we noticed all of the music shops! There were at least 10 on one small street. The one that caught my eye. We were on a double decker and the Lute was calling to me. So we hoped off, grabed a quick bite to eat, and headed to this shop.<br />

All I could think of was that Marie would be in heaven! I got her a card too! I had no idea where to start. The we went back on the 24 heading to Hamstead Heath. Which apparently is a very affluent area. We sure noticed that when we got off the bus. Very nice, but sure felt expensive.<br />
<br />
We decided to head back towards home and maybe hit Harrod's at the same time. At this time it was rush hour so the trains and tube were really busy. We finally arrive and walk in, and started giggling. We stopped at the Gucci purses just to see how much they were. Can't be that bad right?<br />

<br />
So today was kind of a slow day for us. Not that we meant it to be, it just worked out that way. As you saw I finished yesterday's post this morning as I waited for our darks to wash. Actually it is really neat here, everyone has a washer in the kitchen, then you hang your clothes to dry or go to the laundry mat to dry them. Which is perfect for me since I hang everything anyway.<br />
<br />
On the plan for today was to head to Westminster, then maybe Oxford Circus or Harrod's...we made it to Westminster and took a walk along the Thames instead. :) Work out well for us and it was really a nice walk.<br />
<br />
So I am super disappointed that I could not take any pictures inside Westminster. But Jeff got a wonderful one outside.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Westminster's rose window</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So we wandered around the Abbey with our audio guides for about 2.5 hours. It was really neat seeing all the monuments, though I was saddened that I couldn't read a lot of the old ones on the floor. I was happy to finally see Elizabeth I's tomb and the effigy corset! I even got to see St. Edward the Confessor's tomb by attending a service inside the blocked off area. Very interesting. I loved the Lady's Chapel and all of the architecture. I am sad that we don't have any pictures to show you.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A view through the cloister</td></tr>

We travelled through the cloisters to get to Chapter House which is the oldest part of the Abbey, with amazing medieval glazed tiles, the oldest door in Britain and houses the oldest paintings in Britain.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I am sure this was illegal...but this door is dated 1050s. :)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We left Westminster with the expectation of heading to Oxford Circus, but the weather was finally nice and sunny, so opted for a Thames river walk. It was really lovely and fun! We went by the London Eye.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Since it was low tide we were able to walk on the Thames foreshore and look for treasure! Well ok, for the most common thing which are pipe necks. :) I have a whole bunch for a necklace now. :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Greeting from Londres,</div>
<br />
Today was a great day! We woke up to the sun shining, even though it was a little cold. we were happy to see the sun. We had to be out of the house early enough to catch our 9:37 train to Chichester. I planned for us to visit <a href="http://www.wealddown.co.uk/" target="_blank">Weald & Downland Open Air Museum</a>. This is where they filmed portions of the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01k3b96" target="_blank">Tudor Monastery Farm</a> (TMF)! If you are interested in Tudor history it is a must and it is my favourite show.<br />
<br />
It was going to be a bit of a gong show to get there. You see we had to catch the Portsmouth to Chichester train. When we arrived in Chichester, we had to catch the #60 bus going to Midhusrt. We then had to hop off at the Groom's yard in Singleton, and walk 1 km to Weald & Downland. It could have gone so horribly wrong, but thankfully I had planned it like crazy! I was so excited to go there. Mel and Dave raved about it!<br />
<br />
Another bonus, is that if you came on the stagecoach, you got 20% off your entrance fee! YAY! So off we go for a lot of walking. If you plan on visiting, just remember that their map makes everything look really far away, it isn't...lol. I forgot how close everything is on a map here.<br />
<br />

I was so excited to see the view above, they used this in TMF! I was giddy like a school girl meeting One Direction! See....?<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">IT's SO FLUFFY!!! (not really but...lol)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Well Ok maybe not, but I was super excited. so we travelled around the site, amazed at the thatched roofs and how thick they were. So all of the homes and buildings here were taken from other locations around England. They basically dismantle them to save them. Some come into their hands in very poor condition, but the historians try and work out how this building may have looked. We travelled up to the Brewer's cottage, which was really interesting since there was an interpreter actually making ale. Now this ale would not have been carbonated, he was in the process of heating the copper bowl over a fire. In a special "stove".<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">His worktable, with the barley and hops.</td></tr>

He stated the problem with this set up was that they didn't add the proper holes in the brick so that the heat could go around the copper bowl, as it was it would only heat from the bottom. He encouraged us to come back a little later to see the cooking process.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We then moved to the other buildings and found the cheese room! Woo hoo!</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My dream job! She's putting on bread.</td></tr>

<div>
It was really interesting to try what they were making, the flat bread was cooked most likely at the end of the day since they didn't want to heat up the bread oven. It was cooked on the metal griddle in the fire. The pot next to it contained oil, that is what they fried the fritters in. The mixture for the fritters was flour, beer, spinach and onions that had been fried sweet. it was then mixed together and formed into balls (but not as neat, more of a dumpling shape) and put into the oil till cooked. It was delicious. They flat bread with the home-made butter was great too. Definitely whole wheat. This was one of my favourite parts!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After the kitchen, I wanted to check out the house they used in TMF, and it was right next door.</div>

This is the main hall of the building. The windows have large shutters to open and close depending on the weather. The back wall has a painted wall hanging and a table set for a meal. It is a very large room.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The main hall</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What is interesting here, is that the fire is in the centre of the room, it was only used for heat, not cooking. The clay pot in this picture was to keep the embers hot overnight, so that they could start the fire in the morning. All the cooking of food was done in a separate cooking house, to try and eliminate the possibility of a fire burning down the house.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of the upstairs bedrooms (panorama)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
There were 2 bedrooms in this home, each with their own staircase. Most likely the masters room and the children's rooms.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After visiting all the Tudor buildings, we decided to head back to see what the brewer was up to. When we arrived he had put in the barley and hops into the copper bowl over the fire. It was just starting to smell the yeasty smell of cooking barley sugars (like the smell you get near a Molson plant in Montreal).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hops (small bag) and Barley (large bag)</td></tr>

<div>
When we saw them in cheesecloth bags, we were surprised. I didn't even think about how they would do this, but the copper bowl could not be removed, so for cleaning it made more sense to keep all the ingredients in linen. Here you can also see the ratio needed for making ale. It had a wonderful smell. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Weald & Downland have the most amazing views, the homes that are beside the museum are just spectacular. It would be so easy to pretend to be in Tudor or Medieval times in a place like this. Oh yes and the pigs were enormous!</div>

We made our way back to the shop, to see if there was anything I wanted. They had lots of fine pottery, but nothing I couldn't get back home from our pottery throwers. BUT...there was a book, a very expensive book that I had to have. It only came out in December last year...so brand new! I have already read 3 chapters. It is amazing. He worked at Hampton Court and he also has a medieval version of this book. I am in heaven, but it is a huge book!</div>

After paying for my purchases, we walked the km back to the bus stop and made our way back to Chichester. Next time we are in England we will go there, it has a beautiful Cathedral we didn't have time to go into, as well as a beautiful main street. we got back to the bus station, and then made our way to the train station. We were arriving at Victoria Station. That was a crazy place at 6pm on a Monday. There were so many police armed with automatic weapons and hand guns...never seen it before. There were dog sniffers and regular police...crazy! The amount of people was intense too. We were glad to make it back to Rob's place for dinner.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So today we are off to Westminster and a museum and possibly SOHO.</div>

Sorry I didn't post yesterday, but we ended up having a great night with our Airbnb host Dan in Portsmouth...but more on that shortly.<br />

So on Monday morning, we made our way to Waterloo station to start our trip to Portsmouth. I was excited because I have never been anywhere south of London.<br />

I was excited to check out the <a href="http://www.maryrose.org/" target="_blank">Mary Rose Museum</a> because of the 16th century artefacts they found when the raised the ship from it watery grave. It was a good train ride (about and hour and a half) for us to arrive in Portsmouth.<br />

When we left London it was a beautiful sunny day, but as we got closer to Portsmouth it got cloudy and very windy. There were gale wind warnings! Now I bought the discounted tickets to the whole Portsmouth Dockyards, which included a few museums, the ability to go on a bunch of really neat ships and the Mary Rose Museum.<br />

So on our way to the Mary Rose Museum, we get to go by the <a href="http://www.hms-victory.com/" target="_blank">HMS Victory</a>. It is dry docked, but still has a full crew and captain! It was Nelson's flagship during the battle of Trafalgar.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">CANNONS!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So we get to the museum....and man there is quite a bit there. I have lots of pictures of artefacts, but I think the coolest info was about the ship itself. When they raised it out of the water, they needed a method to keep the wood intact, as the water had saturated all the cells of the wood, and if it evaporated the wood would fall apart. So for 30 years (yes 30!) they sprayed the ship with a water/wax solution. This solution would replace just the water and the wax would keep the cell structure when it dried. Preserving the ship for years to come. They finished spraying the ship in 2013, so it now begins its 4 year drying period. It will be ready in 2017.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The black tubes are pushing air to dry the ship.</td></tr>

Once this has been completed, the building that houses the ship, is really neat. It was built with the whole purpose of having all the walls surrounding the ship, get to be removed. So it will be open to view by the public, nothing obstructing the view of it. So cool!<br />
<br />
There were museum staff around showing different reproduction artefacts for people to handle and I found one thing I want...it is a Tudor pepper mill...did they have it in the shop...nope. :( Sadness...they used to sell them, so the shop staff recommend looking on eBay!<br />

Despite the wind, we decided to sit above deck as it had the best view. We found out that this was a very busy week for ships in the docks for repair. Plus they were dismantling all the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-33672484" target="_blank">America's Cup</a> buildings from the weekend. What we didn't know is that the dockyards are a fully functioning Ministry of Defence site, so there were some restrictions.<br />

After our tour we decided to get some dinner and then head to our room with Dan our host. We milled about at <a href="http://www.gunwharf-quays.com/" target="_blank">Gunwarf Quay</a>. It was a typical outlet mall. lol but interesting non the less. We then headed to where we were staying, but could we find how much the bus would cost to get there, nope. It is one of the most disorganized transit I have ever seen. Even the drivers didn't recognize where we needed to go. Thank goodness for google maps. lol<br />
<br />
We get off the bus and stock up on some ciders before we get to our room. I have to say that Dan's place was AMAZING! It is one of the old town-houses in Southsea (a part of Portsmouth), the outside is meh, but when we walked in, he had completely remodelled it! It had a wonderful nautical theme throughout and a retro kitchen. We met Dan and his girlfriend Cat. We came in just as they were having dinner. We sat with them as they ate and we talked all night! It was too bad they had to work on Tuesday. It was really great to meet someone our age, with so much in common. The room was great, he even had breakfast available to us in the morning. I would stay there again for sure. He even recommended that we take the train to Chichester from the station near his place. What a time and money saver! I wish we had taken a picture as a group. It is a great memory!<br />

<br />
We have just gotten home from the Clark's home in the village of Molesworth. Wow! what a really cool place!<br />
<br />
So after our quite late Friday night, we set the alarm to be ready to catch our 10:41am train to Potter's Bar to meet Melissa for the journey to their home. Ok it felt really early, but we got ready and made our way to Kings Cross. Back to our old stomping ground from when we were hear 5 years ago. Our old Hostel was literally across the street! It was yearly and I was hankering for a pain au chocolate (I could smell croissants in the station) so I go and get some Starbucks and a pain au chocolate. It wasn't as flaky as in Ottawa, but ok. It satisfied a need. lol<br />
<br />
So we hop on an overland train and make our way to our first stop. Melissa rolls up just as we are exiting the station. so we get our first foray into driving on the left...takes a little getting used to in a car...a bus feels so much different. But we are excited to get to our destination. We chat for our hour long trip and we arrive at their almost period home. :) We get in and say hi to Rob, Maggie and Sam, it was so nice seeing them again, and Maggie the first time since they came over. Wow she has grown so much. Getting the tour of the house was neat, really crazy on how not level any of the floors were, but I guess buildings settle. It was so neat seeing the size of the double fireplace, even thought it was closed off. It was so much fun to catch up on some SCA fun too! Melissa told us how cool it was to watch the house next to them be thatched by hand, and I would of loved to have seen that.<br />
<br />
The weather was sunny but cool, so we grab the kids and head out for a tour of the village (which is a horseshoe shape road). We stopped at the local church (St. Peters - which some of it is period). It is so amazing to see it how old and beautiful they are.<br />
<br />

The more square portion at the back is the period church, the front being an addition at a post period time. There were 2 amazing frescos inside that square section. The building to me has a very Tudor feel to it. :) Melissa and Rob assured me that the house near us was in fact period 1550s ish.<br />

After our nice walk (and Jeff carrying Maggie on his shoulders), we needed to get ready for the birthday party on the hill. They had a full marquee and a DJ for this costumed 80s shindig. it was celebrating Simon and Rosie's birthday and the whole village (and some of the other villages) come out for the party. A whole hog has been roasting and catering ordered. I was so excited to have a chance at eating a roasted pig. :) We had to pick up some ciders and beer, and we were excited to have fun. It was great, we got to meet a whole bunch of people, and Jeff got to tease Peggy (from the US) all night, I have to admit it was easy to get her going. The music was excellent, and food amazing and the booze flowing. We made it back to the house around 2am. (Hence no post last night) :)<br />

Being lazy and on vacation...we didn't get our of bed until 10am! oops...the kids were so quiet, we didn't even hear them! Some of us were worse off than others...lol, but we enjoyed Rob's french toast for breakfast, and boy does Maggie have and appetite. O.o As per UK weather (I have been informed) that you get one nice day, then a rain day...so today was a rain day. Boy did it rain! I think Jeff commented that it was going sideways! So we convinced Melissa to take us and Maggie on a local church tour...hoping we could go inside them. Unfortunately they were all locked but we did see some amazing locations. Unfortunately for me, most of the tombstones were illegible. The mold rotting their surfaces off. I am sure they were really old too! :( Here are some pictures of cool churches of the area....<br />

Alternate Title: Day 2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Greetings from London....day 2.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">
<br />
So today started with lots of rain. Apparently they were calling for Southern England to get up to 50mm of rain. Boy did we get it. We were very lucky today to sleep in quite a bit (9am) and then start to get ready for our day. I love our Airbnb, we bought groceries last night and had breakfast here in the morning. (BTW 4 pints of semi-skim milk is only £1!) so we ate breakfast and headed into Central London (and not down-town...apparently that is a North American term). We decided to hit the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, lucky for us our bus went straight there, no changing or anything! Now I was planning a guerilla style attack of the gallery (especially since it was raining and where do all the tourists go? To the free gallery...sigh) OK...so Renaissance wing here we come. I got to see some of my favourite paintings.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TBEj64HTRds/VbLWPsz_0cI/AAAAAAAArf8/m259txB2bOs/s1600/DSC05831.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TBEj64HTRds/VbLWPsz_0cI/AAAAAAAArf8/m259txB2bOs/s400/DSC05831.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We ended up going through the whole gallery! I couldn't believe it, neither did my feet! lol So we decided to head for lunch and picked a place called Byron, a nice hamburger joint. The string fries were great and they had some nice cider too. Our waiter spoke like Ali G....it was strange. LOL</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0mAdnnBeN6M/VbLeBYTcIKI/AAAAAAAArgg/u6-dd7EB7pM/s1600/IMAG0246.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0mAdnnBeN6M/VbLeBYTcIKI/AAAAAAAArgg/u6-dd7EB7pM/s400/IMAG0246.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Old Smokey burger</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So after a filling lunch we decide to head back to the apartment. Our phones were dying (still not sure why)...so we hop back on the bus and head back, except that it is hot in the bus, which makes us very sleepy...enough to miss our stop by 2 stops. Sigh...ok well we will walk back, then the heavens opened up and well it poured...Nothing would stop this...I was soaked (even with Mel's rain coat - thanks btw) and umbrellas. We were dripping. So thank goodness we were going back anyway. So we dry off, get warm, eat some dinner (yay groceries) and head back out to the National Portrait gallery. With a whole Tudor section Woo hoo! except it was a full out bust. :( They had like 20 paintings and none of the ones I wanted to see...no Elizabeth I, no Jane Grey, nada. VERY BIG SAD FACE HERE. They had a huge exhibition back in the spring and not even a book on it. :( :( :(</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">M&M Super store</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So we wandered around a bit and saw they had a Nickelodeon shop...so we went to go see the Bubble Guppies merchandise for Olivia...we have gifties! :) Then we went to the M&M shop...that place is crazy big. Bought too much chocolate! lol All in my favourite colours...<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">We then went for a small snack before heading to a movie. :) It is raining, and yucky for walking around and we have no Olivia to worry about, so 9:45pm show here we come. we saw inside out at Leicester Square's Empire theatre, opening night in the UK, 3D and the biggest IMAX screen I had ever seen! It was insane. Jeff got us some wine and beer...and we watched a good movie. Yes I cried like a baby. lol<br />
</span><br /><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">
As I write this it is 1:30am...time for bed. we have an early start, catching the train to visit the Clark's. :) So have a great night everyone, and I will try an post tomorrow, but if I don't I will on Sunday. The trip is already going too fast. :P</span><br />

Has landed??This post is being written in Jolly Old England! We have arrived safe and sound in London. :)<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We left Ottawa at 10:40pm for our red eye on Air Canada. I was surprised that it wasn't sold out and once we were in the air, very jealous of a couple who booked single seats in the row of three chairs, as they had no one bedside them at all and they spread out to sleep.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CHDOiPZnFcY/VbEN58PNIHI/AAAAAAAArZY/_IKpDgstWtI/s1600/26819dc4-80a5-4e5c-89cb-a57e11cb0f94.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="287" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CHDOiPZnFcY/VbEN58PNIHI/AAAAAAAArZY/_IKpDgstWtI/s400/26819dc4-80a5-4e5c-89cb-a57e11cb0f94.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Our plane being readied</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
We were also lucky as the seats ahead of us were also free, so Jeff moved up and slept there. I decided I would watch the new Cinderella live action movie. What can I say about it...well the costuming choices were interesting. Ranging from 18th century to 20th century...not sure how I felt about all those periods jumbled together in the same scenes. LOL</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I was excited to see Hayley Atwell as Ella's Mom and of course Helena Bonham Carter is always excellent. Otherwise I would give it a meh. LOL The rest of the flight was uneventful (excellent for plane travel) but I didn't get much sleep...just not too comfortable. :( The landing in London this morning was amazing!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we managed to walk all the way from our gate to customs (I swear it was at least a kilometre walk. To wait at customs for an hour...lots of people coming into London. We picked up our SIM cards and our Oyster cards and started to make our way into London to find out Airbnb place.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have determined that Google maps walking directions are the pits, and had us walking way longer and out of the way than necessary. But finally we found our place in the Stockwell area. We stopped at a small market and grabbed sandwiches and drinks and I found the best Kettle Chips to try... Bacon and Maple Syrup. Tastes like sweet BBQ.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">mmmm...Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
We met Rob our host and he is fantastic! I am super happy with where we are staying. It is a very large room with a table and sitting area (in fact I think it is their living room when not being rented.) We had lots to talk about including our mutual love of Top Gear. :P</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
right now as I write this it is almost 5pm...we have decided to stay in today, rest up for sightseeing tomorrow. We are going to go get some groceries, have dinner and early to bed. I am tired and we walked a lot today!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We don't have many pics yet, but It has been years since I was last in Heathrow, it it amazing and I do love the people movers. :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well I am signing off for now, Talk to you tomorrow!</div>

excited! I just have a couple of things I need to plan, like what
sightseeing pass I need to get and money to pay for food. :) With <a href="https://www.airbnb.ca/" target="_blank">Airbnb</a>
I have access to kitchens so I hope to eat breakfast and pack lunches
as much as possible. That way if I find something really neat, I can get
it! :)<br /><br />Thank you everyone for the donations. I really appreciate it! <br /><br />If
anyone was planning on donating, please contact me offline, as now it
will take too long for Paypal to get the funds in my account for me to

been busy planning, but I wanted to let you all know that I have booked
my flight and accommodations! I will be flying out of Ottawa on the 22nd
with an overnight flight. Thankfully the funds you all donated helped
my buy my plane ticket (and boy was it expensive!) I will be cooking on
August 1st at Hampton, and meeting some of the historians on July 31st.<br /><br />If
anyone is still thinking about donating, your donation will go towards
my accommodations that I have just booked (or my travel card when I am
in London). Thank you so much for helping me get there!<br /><br />I can't wait to start cooking! :) If you have any questions please email/Facebook me.<br /><br />ErinErin T./Emelote of Calaishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08631555486897900954noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9176897417508564695.post-58477206413797649652015-07-20T10:45:00.000-04:002015-07-20T10:45:00.248-04:00March 25th Update - D is for DinnerI was very lucky in March to be invited by Alan Neal from CBC's Radio One program All in a Day to cook something Tudor for their "D is for Dinner" segment.<br />
<br />
I decided to cook 2 recipes for the show. I made a <a href="http://http//www.hrp.org.uk/HamptonCourtPalace/stories/thetudorkitchens/Tudorcook-alongvideos/TarteowteofLent" target="_blank">Tarte Owte of Lent </a>(cheese tart) a recipe from Hampton Court and <a href="http://www.greneboke.com/recipes/gyngerbrede.shtml" target="_blank">Gyngerbrede</a> (gingerbread).<br />
<br />
Here is my Twitter pic before going into the studio on the 25th. You can follow me @emeloteofcalais on twitter.<br />

<br /></div>
The recipe called for Cheshire cheese which I had never had before. I found it in the cheese section at Farm Boy in Cornwall. What I found really interesting is that it had a similar consistency as feta cheese.<br />
<br />
So it was a lot of fun being on the radio. Here is the sound bite, if you want to hear the segment.<br />

I was really nervous that it would turn out...there are always things I would want to do to change adjust the recipe, but all in all I was happy with the results.</div>

finding out ways to save money. I also have been trying to promote this
as well. I had some really great feedback about this campaign
especially since I am asking for more than I originally fundraised. <br /><br /><b>So
I cam up with hopefully a solution to this, any funds that I don't
need after all my expenses (whether or not at goal) will go directly
back to the Ottawa Food bank.</b><br />
<br />
So if it only costs me $2500 and I raised
over that, then the extra will go to the food bank. So they benefit
as well. <br /><br />So far I have a few leads on cheap accommodation,
travel and flights. So this is excellent. If anyone has ideas for
sponsors please sens me a message <br /><br />So when I have a change I will update my main page to reflect that change. <br /><br />~ErinErin T./Emelote of Calaishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08631555486897900954noreply@blogger.com0
